HCMDGC Oconee

Herman C. Michael is located at 1051 Elder Road in Bishop, just off Highway 53/Hog Mountain Road.

This is another park that Chuck Smith owner of Mr-Disc-Sports has introduced the game of disc golf to.

Back in the fall of 2004 I made my first call to the Park and spoke with Lisa Davol, Athletics Division Administrator about putting in a disc golf course. After that first call a lot of meetings took place with Lisa and Tom Popps, Park Services Division Administrator and a lot of Ideas were shared and plans were put into motion.

Originally the course was going in at heritage park and after many volunteer hours of designing and laying out the course on my part it ended up getting shut down by a county official because we were using land next to a land fill with methane wells not good.

The first Disc Golf action at Herman C. Michael Park, was back in 2005. Myself and Dave Simmons put on a Disc Golf clinic, for a day camp at the park. I set up a Temporary course with 4 baskets and taught children and staff how to play “instant successes” with the kids, Day two upon my return was one of the most gratifying days of my life as I walked into the gym to take the kids out to play they all started chanting my name Chuck Chuck Chuck, it may not sound like much but whenever I get down on disc golf and try to remember why did I ever get in to this game and volunteer my time, money and effort to share the sport I always think back to that day and smile cause I know I am doing the right thing.

In addition, in 2005-I introduced the game to the Community at a special event called Movie in the Park other than the movie it was also a big hit with the families there.

Same in 2006 people showed strong interest in the Game and now the park has delivered a 18 hole course. Thanks to Lisa Davol, Athletics Division Administrator and Tom Popps, Park Services Division Administrator for seeing this Project through.

Now lets get out and play.
